National junior santa gertrudis show
Developed on the King Ranch in South Texas, Santa Gertrudis became the first beef breed developed in the United States in 1940. For more than 85 years, the breed has earned a reputation for combining adaptability, maternal excellence, longevity and growth, making it a trusted choice for producers across diverse environments.
Purebred female show
The Purebred Female Show is the cornerstone of cattle competition at the National Junior Santa Gertrudis Show, featuring registered purebred Santa Gertrudis females exhibited by NJSGA members from across the country. Females compete through their respective classes and divisions before selection of the national champions. Division Grand and Reserve Champions also earn a donated heifer through the NJSGS Donated Heifer Program, making success in the division drives an important part of the Junior Nationals experience.
Bred and Owned Female show
The Purebred Bull Show showcases registered Santa Gertrudis bulls owned and exhibited by NJSGA members. Entries compete through classes based on NJSGS guidelines, providing juniors the opportunity to exhibit the herd-sire prospects and genetics represented in their programs. Like all purebred entries at NJSGS, bulls must be registered with Santa Gertrudis Breeders International and meet the SGBI Standard of Excellence.
Star 5 female show
The STAR 5 Female Show highlights percentage females and the role Santa Gertrudis genetics can play in a crossbreeding program. An eligible STAR 5 female must be recorded with SGBI, be between 50% and 87.5% Santa Gertrudis and meet the same animal age and ownership guidelines as the Purebred Female Show. Females compete through age-based classes for Grand and Reserve Champion STAR 5 Female, with both champions receiving a donated heifer through the NJSGS Donated Heifer Program.
Purebred bull show
The Bred & Owned Female Show recognizes junior members who are actively developing genetics of their own. Competition is limited to purebred females that the exhibitor has solely and continuously owned from conception through the time of the show. The junior must have been the only owner listed on the dam’s registration certificate at conception, and the female cannot have been transferred out of the junior’s name at any point. Bred & Owned entries must also compete in the NJSGS Purebred Female Show. Grand and Reserve Champion Bred & Owned Females each earn a donated heifer.
Donated Heifer show
The Donated Heifer Show brings the NJSGS Donated Heifer Program full circle. Juniors who received a heifer at the previous year’s Junior Nationals have the opportunity to return with that female and compete in a special class recognizing the heifers, their recipients and the breeders who made the program possible. Donated heifers may also compete in their respective NJSGS classes, and an award is presented to both the Grand Champion Donated Heifer and her donor.
Best of polled purebred females
The Best of Polled Purebred Females competition provides additional recognition for polled genetics represented within the NJSGS Purebred Female Show. Eligible registered purebred females compete for Best of Polled honors, highlighting polled Santa Gertrudis genetics exhibited by junior members.
